Upper Segura Valley

A large rural area in the north of the Murcia province, dotted with little-visited towns and villages, the Upper Segura valley is primarily a grape growing area, criss-crossed by small country roads that weave their way through the lush valley.

Molina de Segura

Just north of Murcia, Molina de Segura is the 4th largest town of the province with a population of 50,000. Its proximity to Murcia has made Molina an important industrial centre. The town has a long history, traces of Iberian, Cartharginian and Roman cultures have all been found here.
Molina is 8km north of Murcia, easily accessible by main roads.
San Javier Airport is 28km away.
The nearest golf course is Altorreal, 12km away.

To the northwest of Molina, the famous spas of Balneario de Archena can be found. The thermal resort is just outside the village of Archena. The spas are used to treat skin complaints and respiratory problems. A group of hotels and special installations have been built here and the spas attract a number of visitors.

Ricote

The village is situated on a hillock at the head of the valley. It is of Moorish origin, situated in the Ricote valley. Split in two by the Rio Segura, whose fast waters descend from Cieza and Abaran, forming a pool, the valley of Ricote is a picturesque area.
Ricote is 12km from Molina de Segura.

The villages of Ojos, Ulea and Villanueva del Segura are situated along the river Segura south of Ricote, between small, bare hills that contrast with the fertile fields dotted with palm trees that surround them.

Jumilla

An important wine growing region with 50 registered wineries, Jumilla is surrounded by endless fields of vineyards. The town is spread out around the base of a castle which presides over the surrounding area. The Church of Santiago in Jumilla is a national monument worth a look with its gothic, renaissance and baroque features. On Easter Tuesday, the Via Crucis in Jumilla is notable for the Christ tied to a column that is carried through the streets.
In the northeast of the Upper Segura Valley, Jumilla is fairly isolated, 45km from Murcia and 55km from Alicante.

Cieza

Cieza with a population of 30,000, is situated on a fertile plain and backed by mountains covered in esparto grass. This esparto was the material used for Cieza’s important craftwork in the past. The 18th century Church of La Asuncion and the Franciscan Convent are both worth visiting.
Cieza is 25km from Murcia on the main N301

Blanca

South of Jumilla, the village of Blanca with 5000 inhabitants is surrounded by agricultural fields and mountains, is a sleepy village that seems almost untouched by the 21st century. It remains a traditional farming village.

Yecla

Spread at the foot of a castle, the town of Yecla is another town surrounded by vineyards. The town has 2 church towers visible above the rooves of the houses, one with a blue tiled dome. Yecla has 28,000 inhabitants.
In the far north of the Upper Segura Valley, Yecla is closer to Alicante, 50km away, than it is to Murcia, 60km away.
Alenda Golf Club is 40km from Yecla.
